CIK KF3 European Championships Rd 1 Varennes, France 27-29 April, 2012

105 drivers of 23 different nationalities went to battle for the first round of the CIK KF3 European Championships. Weather conditions for the seasons first major CIK event proved very difficult for the competing drivers with variable conditions throughout. The event yielded many heat winners; notably reigning European champion George Russell (Intrepid/Vortex), Dorrian Boccalacci (Intrepid/TM), Alex Palou(CRG/BMB), Callum Illot (Zanardi/Parilla), Conor Jupp (Energy/Vortex) amongst others all racing with the Tillotson HW10A carburetor.

Final 1 turned out to be a textbook victory for George Russell taking the lead early on and drove to victory from fellow Intrepid pilot Dorrian Boccalacci. The race behind was intense with Martin Kodric (Alonso/Vortex) taking 3rd ahead of Palou, Simone Cunati (Topkart/Parilla) and Alessio Piccini (Kosmic/Vortex) rounding out the top 6. It was shaping up to be a hectic Final 2….

The first corner had proved to be difficult to get around without incident all weekend and Final 2 was no different. Final One winner Russell held the lead into Turn 1 however found himself in the gravel after a wild lunge from behind. The next few laps resembled a destruction derby with Boccalacci dumped out of the lead and down the order by his Intrepid teammate Robert Shwartzman. It was Alex Palou who took up the mantle and drove very consistently while under heavy pressure from British driver Alex Gill (Wright/Parilla) who by the finish had been demoted to 3rd by the Topkart of Marcus Dionisios.  Palou now leads the championship from Russell and Boccalacci heading into the final event in the P.F. international circuit in the UK. It is shaping up to be an exciting event….
